The school
Hvassaleitisskóli is a comprehensive primary school with 230 students in grades 1-7. Most of our students come from Austurborg preschool. Most students transfer to Réttarholtsskóli after finishing 7th grade to complete their primary school education.
At Hvassaleitisskóli, we focus on putting students and their needs first. During the 2024-2025 academic year, we introduced formative learning alongside the Positive Discipline framework. Instruction at the youngest level follows the Beginning Literacy method, while the mid-level offers interdisciplinary elective courses. The school has an active autism division called the Masters Division, where 9 students are studying.
Recreation
The after-school program Krakkakot is for children in grades 1 to 4, and the youth center Tónabær offers diverse and enjoyable activities for children and adolescents.

Primary school meals
School meals are free for the 2025-2026 school year. However, the school still needs to track information about allergies and intolerances and limit food waste. Students must register for the school lunch program as before.
Parents/guardians must now register for the school lunch program in the Matartíminn system and select which weekdays their children will eat. Students should choose the same weekdays each week, such as every Tuesday and/or every Thursday. More information and instructions are on the Matartíminn/Abler website.

We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child.

School rules
The national curriculum for primary schools states that students need to develop various skills in daily life to be active participants in a democratic society, including communication skills, respect, tolerance, and understanding of democratic society structure. Students must learn to interact harmoniously with each other and all school staff, take responsibility for their own conduct and behavior, and respect school rules.
Assessment of school operations
The goal of assessing and monitoring quality is to provide insight into schooling, its outcomes, and its development.
